Understanding and managing the pain of children while they are in the hospital is a top priority for a speedy recovery. Since 1998, nurse practitioners Debbie Jury, NP and Megan Middleton, NP have dedicated 100% of their time to this endeavor. Research into the nervous system of children reveals they experience greater pain than adults, making this a crucial aspect of patient care at our hospital. The goal of the pain management team is to provide pain relief with minimum side effects. Dr. Giovanni Cucchiaro, Director of the Comfort Pain Management Program, explains how he and his team work to provide maximum comfort using traditional methods, as well as alternative therapies including massage therapy, acupuncture and visits from the Animal-Assisted Therapy Program. Chief Nursing Officer, Mary Dee Hacker, RN, discusses the role our nurses have in minimizing pain for patients.
