Is Emu Oil Really a Good Option for Pain Relief?
I have been thinking a lot lately about a product that I recently saw. You may have seen infomercials on TV promoting the use of Emu Oil for excruciating pain relief, or perhaps you’ve seen advertisements claiming that Emu Oil could temporarily cure deep tissue muscle pain. How true are these claims?
The aboriginal people of Australia have used Emu Oil throughout their history to help relief pain caused by ailments like bruises, insect bites, muscle aches, rashes and more. For many years, people around the world have used Emu Oil as a nontraditional form of pain relief because of its seemingly natural anti-inflammatory and hypo-allergenic qualities. Today, in the United States, you can purchase Emu Oil products online, through infomercials and even in mass retail stores, such as WalMart and Walgreens.
Still, the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission have chastised companies for making unsubstantiated claims when it comes to the healing powers of Emu Oil. While it would be outrageous to say that Emu Oil is a cure-all for every pain a person may experience, research has been ongoing over the past decade by some of the countries most highly respected schools.
While no official data has been published, this is what we do know from some of that research:
Emu Oil can promote collagen and thickening of the skin by up to 30 percent, which can eliminate wrinkles, according to Dr. Michael Holick from Boston University School of Medicine.
At the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and Indiana University School of Medicine, tests have shown that Emu Oil appears to be a non pore-clogging substance.
Several physicians around the country have noted regular use of Emu Oil with their patients for a varied number of skin ailments, from burns to skin sores, surgery incisions, and eczema with a high success rate.
In a study done by a doctor from the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia and a professor from the University of Adelaide in Australia, it was found that when they used Emu Oil on arthritis patients there was a reduction in pain by 100 percent in just 14 days and inflammation was reduced by 100 percent in 17 days.
In 2003, a British Marathoner won the London Marathon after he collided with another cyclist earlier that year in a training session. He credited the use of Emu Oil, which he had used to speed up the healing of cuts and bruises he had obtained in the crash, as helping to get him ready for the race.
Other professional athletes like Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, was at a PGA Show in Orlando where he spoke about using Blue-Emu®, an Emu Oil based cream, and how much relief it gives him even now.
The Director for the Center for Health and Disease Research at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, Dr. Robert Nicolosi has noted that his research of Emu Oil in animals indicates that “Emu Oil does have cholesterol lowering anti-inflammatory and transdermal properties.”
Even though the FDA has not given the green light for manufacturers of Emu Oil in the United States to make bold claims about the effectiveness of Emu Oil to help soothe a myriad of aches and pains, for many people Emu Oil is a real option in pain relief.
Natural Writer is a writer who likes to write about whatever naturally comes to mind. Topics covered by Natural Writer can be so varied but tend to lean towards natural medicine. Here is how it works: Natural Writer sees something in print, online or on TV that makes the wheel in her mind start turning. What is born in her brain in that moment becomes what you read. Organic, as factually correct as possible, and, she hopes, helpful and interesting to the reader. Sometimes, a topic will be introduced to her psyche and she will begin to mull over what that product or thing means to different people in different ways. Thats when you know Natural Writer is really thinking and truthfully, might just be trying something new out for herself.
